The ‘Elon Musk and Twitter saga’ is something that we are all familiar with at this point. Since the Tesla CEO has announced that he is interested in buying Twitter to make it a genuine user-based platform and to promote free speech, the road leading there has had some bumps, to say the least.
Elon Musk’s 44bn deal with Twitter has been on hold since he wants concrete information about the bot users of the app. In a private press conference in Miami, Musk estimated about 20-25% of users of the app to be bots. The number might even be close to 90% of daily active users according to him. Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal disagrees, as he made it clear on Monday that internal estimates of Twitter for spam accounts in the last four quarters were well under 5%. He also made it clear that they suspend over half a million spam accounts every day and their estimate is based on multiple human reviews of thousands of accounts that are sampled at random.
Elon Musk had also called for the test of random samples of Twitter users to identify bot accounts, to which the Twitter CEO said is not possible, because to determine if an account is spam or not they need to review public and private information which cannot be reproduced externally. Mr. Musk clearly not having any of this replied with a poop emoji to this series of tweets while asking why can’t Twitter just call the user and confirm. Previously Musk even talked about how he did not agree with Twitter banning Former US President Donald Trump because according to him it will amplify his voice even more.
All of these conversations have had an adverse effect on Twitter as its share was down 7.7% at 37.50 dollars in the afternoon trade. A few trade insiders even speculate that all this chaos is probably only because the SpaceX CEO might want a better deal off Twitter. Where this goes from here only Time and Mr. Musk can tell.
