Is your Mac’s juice running out faster than anticipated, or do you want to get more hours out of it? Either way, these simple yet fruitful battery-saving tips are here for your rescue.
1. Dim the Display
The most significant drain on battery resources is powering the display. Hence, lowering your display’s brightness is the first thing to do. Dim the screen to a level that is comfortable for your eyes. This will also save battery life. You can either manually dim the screen brightness or set the display to shut off after a period of inactivity (read more below). This can be done in the Battery Preferences option.
2. Adjust Screen Timeout
Have you noticed how the display turns off after a period of inactivity? It is essential to note that this isn’t Sleep Mode. Your Mac’s display is turning off due to a feature called screen timeout. This feature is used to save electricity consumption and battery life. It is possible to increase or decrease screen timeout.
If you wonder how to change screen timeout, these are the steps:
- Head to System Preferences and click Battery
- Go to the Battery tab
- Reset Turn off display after to any setting you want, from one minute to never
3. Turn Off the Keyboard Backlight
Turn off the keyboard light to save your Mac’s battery, or you can set it at the minimum level. You can do this by going to System Preferences > Keyboard. Here, you can adjust the keyboard brightness or turn it off completely.
4. Turn on Low Power Mode
To ensure your Mac is constantly saving battery, you can turn on the Low Power Mode. This can be enabled in System Preferences > Battery. With this option enabled, your Mac will perform using the least battery so you can save juice.
5. Use Safari Instead of Chrome
Is Chrome your main browser? This might be the culprit behind the excessive battery drain. It would be best if you switched to using Safari. This is Apple’s default browser and is optimized for using minimum resources.
Besides Safari, it is always best to use Apple applications. These applications are tested and approved by the company. They are designed to consume less resources and battery.
6. Close Irrelevant Browser Tabs
Increase your system’s battery life by closing the browser tabs you are not using any longer. Also, it is best not to run multiple active tabs in the background. This impacts the system’s overall performance and results in excessive battery consumption.
7. Disconnect Accessories
If you are not using a USB-connected device, it is best to disconnect them. Unplugging these accessories will prevent battery drain.
8. Quit the Apps You are not Using
It is best to close the apps and programs after you are done using them. If there are too many unnecessary programs running in the background, it puts pressure on your Mac’s battery. So, quit the active applications.
You can also open the Activity Monitor > click the Energy tab and close any program that’s consuming too much battery. Freeing up resources will also give your computer the boost it needs to function properly.
9. Update the Software
An outdated Mac software negatively affects the battery life of the device. Hence, you must always use the latest macOS version. These upgrades include battery and performance improvements to ensure your device lasts as long as possible.
To update the macOS software, head to System Preferences by clicking the Apple icon and then choose Software Update. If there are updates available and pending, you will see a red circle over the gear icon. Once you click Update Now, it will take a few minutes for your system to load and display the latest upgrades. You may also have to restart your computer so that the changes are applied.
Your Mac can be upgraded manually, or you can set up automatic updates so that your computer is always up-to-date.
10. Turn Off Wi-Fi When not in Use
Similar to unplugging accessories, it helps to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are not in use. This will make a significant difference to your battery life. So, if you are working on a project, editing photos, reading offline, or doing tasks that don’t need the Internet, you can turn it off and save some juice.
Click on the Wi-Fi icon found on the right side of the top menu bar and click Turn Wi-Fi Off. This can also be turned off in the Network Settings under System Preferences.
