Microsoft will integrate a ChatGPT-like system, called “Windows Copilot,” in all PC apps, the Redmond, Washington-based tech giant announced Tuesday. The Copilot will be available for Windows 11 as a preview in June.

During the Microsoft Build conference, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made an exciting announcement that garnered significant attention from attendees and technology enthusiasts. He introduced Windows Copilot as a ground breaking addition to the Windows ecosystem, positioning it as the user’s personal assistant. This new feature was designed to empower users and enhance their experience with Windows.

Nadella emphasized the transformative nature of Windows Copilot, stating that it would enable every user to become a power user of Windows. By leveraging the power of generative artificial intelligence, Windows Copilot aims to provide personalized assistance and support to users across various tasks and activities.

The integration of generative AI into Microsoft’s products has been an ongoing endeavor, and the partnership with OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has played a crucial role in this journey. Microsoft had previously incorporated generative AI technology into its search engine Bing and web browser Edge, both of which received positive feedback from users.

However, it is important to note that despite Microsoft’s significant investment in OpenAI, Nadella clarified that Microsoft does not have direct control over the company. This partnership enables Microsoft to leverage OpenAI’s expertise in AI research and development, contributing to the advancement of their own AI-driven products and services.

With the introduction of Windows Copilot, Microsoft aims to revolutionize the way users interact with Windows, making it more intuitive, efficient, and user-friendly. By harnessing the capabilities of generative AI, Copilot can assist users in tasks such as document creation, code writing, troubleshooting, and more. The goal is to provide personalized, context-aware suggestions and guidance, streamlining workflows and increasing productivity.

Windows Copilot’s potential impact extends beyond individual users to benefit businesses and organizations as well. By empowering users with intelligent assistance, it has the potential to optimize workflows, enhance collaboration, and drive innovation within professional environments.

The announcement of Windows Copilot during the Microsoft Build conference generated excitement and anticipation among attendees, developers, and technology enthusiasts. It represents Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to leveraging AI technologies and OpenAI’s expertise to create innovative and user-centric products that push the boundaries of what is possible with Windows. As Windows Copilot becomes available, users can look forward to an enhanced Windows experience that truly transforms the way they interact with their devices.

“Even for us, it’s been surprising to see how much of the zeitgeist is being captured by things like ChatGPT,” Scott said during the conference.

The Copilot will be available in a taskbar for users. Once open, the Copilot will “stay consistent across your apps, programs and windows,” said Chief Product Officer Panos Panay. It will be available for users in apps such as Word and Teams.

Windows revenue has been a source of struggle for the tech giant. Revenue decreased more than 12% to $5.3 billion in the most recent quarter compared to the same quarter last year.

While tech giants such as Microsoft and Google are accelerating their deployment of AI technologies, advocacy groups, researchers and even AI startups such as OpenAI are asking for a more robust set of AI guidelines and regulations.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a Senate testimony earlier this month that lawmakers should create regulations to curb AI’s potential harms such as disinformation.

“I think if this technology goes wrong, it can go quite wrong,”

Altman said.

Microsoft says it has an in-house AI ethics team and a set of AI principles, which includes leadership involvement, inclusive governance and actionable guidelines and investment and empowerment for people.
