All New: QR Codes for Facebook Events

Are you hosting a Facebook event? Is it an exclusive kind of event? Do you want to make sure that anybody who is invited to it feels as if they’ve become a part of something special, something not everybody can access? Welcome to the world of QR code, which can now be used to direct people to your Facebook event. We just spotted that Facebook has introduced QR Codes for Facebook Events and given you the ability to download it right from your Event page. If you’re reading this, you’re one of the first to know.

What is a QR Code?

A QR code or ‘Quick Response’ code is a two-dimensional barcode that can lead you, when scanned by a mobile device, to a unique url.

This is obviously an excellent gimmick to use. It captures people’s imagination – it’s like having a secret password that will let you into a secret party that’s only for the invited, special people. It’s like having a pass to the VIP section.

What’s new, and how can you get it?

Until now, you could use multiple tools to create QR codes that could be printed or downloaded, shared via Facebook and other social media sites.

Click the bottom right corner of your event’s cover photo, on the button with the three dots, indicating more options. You will get a drop-down menu that gives you the option ‘Get QR Code’.

Now you can download a QR code to your Facebook event and you will be able to embed it on posters or other marketing material for your Facebook event. The next step is to spread the word. Send the QR code out to people you want attending the party. Let them know that it’s a by-invitation only event, and that they have got an invite.

They can now join the event and participate in it, leaving comments and engaging with panellists, making your event successful.

How does this help you?

This gives you an edge in getting the word out about your event. It could also work out to be a good way to keep trolls away. You can spread the word to as many or as few guests as you want, making sure that the tone of your event is just right, and its purpose is fulfilled without derailing.

Convenience is also a factor that can’t be ignored. Now your target audience does not have to search for your event, or look through their many invites. Scan, and they’re taken directly to it. The novelty added to the ease can give your event an extra edge.

It also helps you engage users. A call to action of any sort is always better than something passive, like inviting somebody to an event and hoping they will show up. A call to action engages your invitees and makes them involved in your event even before they post a single comment, or even click ‘join’. This engagement can lead to a much more dynamic Facebook event.

What’s the limitation of this new tool?

Not all smartphones come with QR Code reading apps preloaded. If your target audience does not have phones that can scan these codes, this will be useless for you. If they don’t have a barcode-reader and don’t plan on getting one, it won’t help you. This tool has excellent potential, but only if you target the right audience with it.
