During an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed his plans to develop an alternative to ChatGPT called “TruthGPT.” Musk visualises this new AI as a “maximum truth-seeking” alternative, which he believes is important to prevent the potential destruction of humanity. According to Musk, a different approach to AI creation is needed, and he hopes that TruthGPT will be the solution.

What is TruthGPT?

“I’m going to start something which I call TruthGPT or a maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe,” Musk said.
“And I think this might be the best path to safety in the sense that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans because we are an interesting part of the universe.”
Musk had compared an AI’s supposed lack of desire to destroy all of humanity to the way humans strive to protect chimpanzees which is pretty ironic given Neuralink’s treatment of them. “We recognize humanity could decide to hunt down all the chimpanzees and kill them,” Musk said. “We’re actually glad that they exist, and we aspire to protect their habitats.”
Elon Musk expressed his concern with the direction of OpenAI, the non-profit AI software organization he co-founded, which recently launched a for-profit subsidiary. Musk assumes that OpenAI’s profit-driven approach might compromise the ethical standards of the AI models it creates. In acknowledgement, Musk introduced “TruthGPT” as the alternative that spotlights transparency and integrity in its operations while positioning it as a course correction for OpenAI’s potential missteps.
This is not the first time that Musk has wretched about creating a “TruthGPT.” He tweeted in February that “what we need is TruthGPT,” while also calling attention to the risks of large-scale AI models, like those made by Open AI. Musk, along with several other AI researchers signed an open letter in March that urges companies to pause “giant AI experiments” that their creators can’t “understand, predict, or reliably control.”
Although it is not yet clear how much progress has been made on “TruthGPT,” or if the project exists at all, Elon Musk’s mention of it during his interview with Tucker Carlson suggests that he is serious about its development. Additionally, Musk recently established a new AI company called X.AI in March, indicating his continued interest in AI technology and innovation.
