Looks like Meta has met another Meta, again! After CEO Mark Zuckerberg put all his efforts into his vision of the metaverse, it almost seems as if he has been blinded by the metaverse dream and he seems to be taking any route possible, even if it means stomping on another company’s hard work, sweat, and efforts.

As reported by TheVerge, A company called META or meta.is or (as their website post displays) #therealmeta announced on Saturday that it is going to sue the ‘now’ Meta for trademark violation. As this lawsuit comes, which is definitely not surprising, the art-installation company has alleged CEO Zuckerberg’s decision to change the name has violated the company’s established brand.

The company’s website post reads, “On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our META mark and name, which we put our blood, sweat, and tears into building for over twelve years.” It adds, “Amid the challenges of the pandemic and its impact on the experiential space, we were putting the finishing touches on our new initiative, UNREALITY. Then, one of the most powerful companies in the world took our identity without notice.”

Now, after negotiating with Meta for eight months, the company has finally decided to file a lawsuit against them. Although their complaint and distress in the matter are extremely legitimate, the company needs to gear up for a long-drawn court matter. This is because of the wide-ranging trademark applications Facebook made while changing its name.

“On October 28, 2021, Facebook seized our META mark and name, which we put our blood, sweat, and tears into building for over twelve years.”

There are several other companies from various sectors with the name Meta but this company is particularly concerned with the reputation attached to the name Facebook (Now Meta). Hence, “Meta is associated with the toxicity that is inextricably linked with Facebook”

The post on META’s website also mentions, “Facebook talks a big game about supporting creators, but the proof is in their actions. If they’re willing to blatantly seize our IP and use it in the same spaces we have operated in for more than a decade, we can’t imagine what’s coming when they further saturate our industry and dominate the ‘metaverse’.”

It seems as if Meta is going on a lawsuit spree these days. Since the company has transitioned from Facebook it keeps inviting some kind of lawsuit. In May 2022, the company was being sued for its logo by a non-profit blockchain development company. This is just one among many lawsuits.

The name Meta is definitely creating a lot of problems. But is it really important that the name ‘Meta’ should be attached to creating the future of the metaverse?
