When MS Dhoni was retained by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in IPL 2022, it raised multiple eyebrows of cricket greats, and understandably so. The guy, wasn’t in the best of form, had a poor IPL 2021 and without any practice seemed like baggage but don’t you dare call Dhoni baggage as he has proved why he is the real boss a couple of days back.
Chasing 17 from the last over, he was left with just four balls. 16 out of four, and he got that against a very talented bowler Jaydev Unadkat who had a fabulous game till that over. The game has witnessed many finishers, like Michael Bevan, Ian Harvey, Yuvraj Singh, Kapil Dev, and Arvinda De Silva but they were great only for a few months, and couldn’t maintain the consistency for as long as Dhoni did. And perhaps, nobody could do as effectively as he did. If there’s a man that could be the synonym for “Finisher”, it would be Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

There wouldn’t be any to negate this, Dhoni is the best wicketkeeper-batsman this game has ever produced, especially in shorter formats.
If I begin to write praises about this modern-day great, I would run short of words. Such has been his impact on this game. A media-shy personality, he doesn’t like to be in news for anything other than Cricket. This guy has so much following in Tamil Nadu, that every Tamilian identifies themselves as Dhoni’s fan and that’s unreal for a guy who barely speaks Tamil or understands it. In fact, it’s easier to find a house for rent in Chennai if you are from Jharkhand, all because of Dhoni.

His four hits of the last over just brought in additional, millions of viewers to spike IPL viewership, which has seen a below-average TRP this year and gave life to CSK’s struggling campaign. Nevertheless, the danger isn’t averted, CSK is still in ICU; currently placed at 9th position, and need probably a win every time to reach play-offs but they couldn’t have hoped for a better surgeon.
With Dhoni back as a finisher, Bravo as a death bowling specialist, and the middle-order back in form, CSK has all the ingredients for another successful season. A season like MI, where they started slow and peaked at the right time. In football terms, Dhoni’s role would be more of an impact substitute who comes at the 70th minute and galvanizes the team. He isn’t new to this, but most importantly not too old for this. Mahendra Singh Dhoni still has many runs in his bag, and CSK fans would hope it keeps coming.
