For the longest time, I thought I was just tired. Even the eight hours of sleep didn’t seem enough. You know the kind of tired that just comes along with long hours of work, less socializing, and too much of scrolling. I had almost convinced myself that it was normal. That heavy feeling on your chest? Just another Monday. But thank goodness I figured out that this in fact was not normal. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t figure it out just after feeling this for week, and I still haven’t figured it out completely. I’m just like you who’s trying to stay healthy and do the right thing.

If you know what I’m talking about good for you. But if you don’t know yet let me tell you- It was burnout. And the worst part? It’s cause was not the breakdowns I had. It was those tiny, invisible habits I didn’t even recognize were hurting me.

Burnout Signs Are Not So Obvious

If you still believe or think that burnout happens because of working too much, I’m afraid you’re wrong.

Burnout hides behind things that look productive:

  • Checking your mails at midnight “just in case”
  • Saying yes to every project because “I can handle it”
  • Skipping lunch to “get ahead”
  • Feeling guilty for taking a break

But do you know what’s not cool? People actually appreciate this, the toxic productivity. People call you “driven,” “dedicated,” “a machine.” But guess what ? this is not okay! You can’t be internally falling apart when everyone else is clapping for “hard work” externally.

Triggers You Should Not Ignore

Here’s one thing no one talks about: micro-decisions are silently draining your energy. I’m talking about those 100 tiny decisions that seem like they aren’t taking a lot of space, but they are.

  • “Should I check email or finish that report first?”
  • “Should I join this meeting or send an update?”
  • “Do I respond to this now or later?”

Every tiny decision like this consumes energy from your mental energy reserves. This phenomenon is called decision fatigue and it’s actually very common. Research actually shows that the brain tires out from making repeated decisions, even small ones. So it’s not the amount of work that’s exhausting…. it’s the energy that goes in choosing, switching, and juggling priorities constantly. It’s taking a toll on our energy levels.

Other Hidden Burnout Signs

  1. Toxic Productivity Disguised as Discipline: The “always working” and “staying focused 24/7” are just not it. If you’re pushing through brain fog, and refusing to pause- that’s not focusing, that’s just the fear of falling behind.
  2. Always-On Phone Habits: Our parents were right, these phones are the root cause of all the problems. It’s not just harmless fun, it does so much to us. It has already disrupted our attention span and has wired our brain for constant dopamine hits. Studies (like the Frontiers in Psychology 2021 review) show it’s a major burnout contributor, as stated in Psychology Today.
  3. The Validation Loop: Let’s be honest we have all been there, at least once in our lives. Doing so much to just be seen, being a Yes-Man just to gain approval. It all feels good…..until one day it stops, and the reality hits. Because most of the times no one even notices and you’re left all drained and invisible.

What Helped Me (And Might Help You)

      1. Create “No-Think” Zones– I personally like simple routines, the same ones daily that minimizes my thinking of what to do next. Because my routine has been planned already as well as meal preps, and even my outfit choices. Because it’s really simple- fewer choices = more energy for what’s important and what matters more.
      2. Start Saying “Not Right Now” Instead of “Yes”– This one small change has helped me a lot. What saying “not right now” does is it gives you space without guilt. It does 2 things- first it gives you time and space, second it respects the other person’s needs.
      3. Make subtraction your favorite math concept– Overwhelm is not caused by doing hard work, it’s actually caused by scattered work. It’s time to strip away from the excessive noise because clarity comes from subtracting the unnecessary.

Gentle Reminder: Burnout Is Not a Badge of Honor

Hustle culture is a scam. I’m not saying you to get lenient and work on whatever terms you feel like. All I’m saying is do the necessary. Because no one will hand out trophies for overworking. Exhaustion is a warning, not something to be proud of. If you need to hear this today, this one’s for you- It’s okay to pause. And you’re allowed to be ambitious without being depleted.

Your New Checklist: Spot Burnout Signs Before It Spreads

      SymptomAsk YourselfSmall Fix
Indecisiveness“Have I made too many choices today?”Pre-plan decisions. Automate where you can.
Endless scrolling“Am I actually relaxing or avoiding?”Replace with low-dopamine breaks (walk, journaling).
Constant guilt“Am I working from fear or clarity?”Revisit your priorities. Say no where needed.

You don’t need to earn your rest. And you don’t need to apologize to protect your energy. If setting boundaries or feeling like you don’t belong is part of the struggle, here’s how to overcome imposter syndrome and own your space.
