Is Apple Vision Pro already losing its luster?

Apple Vision Pro is a mixed-reality headset developed by Apple Inc. It was announced on June 5, 2023, and became available for purchase on February 2, 2024, in the United States.

Vision Pro’s market performance is still ongoing, with Apple reportedly selling up to 180,000 units so far. However, the mixed reviews and subsequent decision by some users to return the device seem to suggest a disparity between the expectations set by Apple and the real-world experience of some early customers.

Buyers are returning their headsets because they’re disappointed by the experience offered by the mixed-reality gadget. The device is heavy & the interface isn’t flawless either, making it hard to justify the $3,500 price point.

The Vision Pro launched recently and it’s already evident that the mixed-reality headset is still an early prototype. Even with impressive demos and excellent reviews, using it on a daily is difficult.

One major reason for the returns is that the design is quite unconventional and not in a good way. Farzad Mesbahi, a YouTuber, says that wearing a device on his head and face can be inconvenient even if he can get it to sit comfortably. He can’t see himself using the headset for long periods as people do with smartphones, tablets, and computers. Users complain that the device’s weight is obvious enough to be a burden. It also instilled headaches and motion Sickness in some.

“You kind of find yourself in this virtual environment and you’re asking yourself what you’re doing here,” said Randy Chia, a product manager for an investment firm in Los Angeles. He returned the device after finding his face would get sweaty after use. It also made him feel exhausted, and he bemoaned the buggy software.

Additionally, Vision Pro’s customers are not very fond of the headset’s vision quality either. According to recent reviews, the headset’s vision quality has received some negative feedback. Customers have reported issues with the clarity and sharpness of the images, which affects their overall experience. Some have also mentioned the need for better color accuracy and brightness.

Mesbahi wrote on X that the device’s ability to overlay virtual apps on top of a user’s line of vision is “not good” when it comes to clearly observing his surroundings. When looking at real objects, Mesbahi says his line of vision is “still quite grainy in most lighting conditions.”

Another common issue found is that Vision Pro doesn’t offer enough productivity. The Vision Pro has impressive technology, but the product does not meet ergonomic standards for all people. This means that people have different needs when it comes to using the product comfortably and safely.

For Carter Gibson, a senior manager working on community management and moderation at Google, it’s the finer details. Things like futzing around with Windows and file management are productivity deal-breakers. “It’s difficult to multitask between ‘windows’,” Gibson further says in an exchange on Threads.

“Several file types simply aren’t supported on the Vision Pro.I also can’t see how creating a slide in the VP would be less energy than doing so with w/a mouse and keyboard — even if does feel like you’re in Minority Report.”

“If I’m not using this for productivity, and if I don’t love it for entertainment, and if there aren’t enough games to play on it – I just can’t justify keeping it,” one Reddit user wrote.

That being said, predicting the future is hard to say as we don’t know how this vocal subset of early adopters will impact Vision Pro. Many customers who said they’d be returning the device also noted they’d be eager to try a second generation Vision Pro. Furthermore, it’s also difficult to say how widespread of a phenomenon this is. While people are speaking out on social media, we don’t know the actual return rate or what Apple’s internal expectations for the Vision Pro are.

On one hand, even some of the most loyal Apple customers have had second thoughts. There are also supporters of Vision Pro who emphasize that this device is merely the first generation and will get better in time. They make their point by referring to the original iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch and their quirks.

Tech giants vow to fight AI-generated election ‘deepfakes’

Major technology firms vow to combat disinformation campaigns during elections with the use of advanced AI technologies to detect and mitigate the spread of fake videos, commonly known as “deepfakes”.

At the Munich Security Conference (MSC), the companies signed a tech accord to fight the deceptive use of AI in the 2024 elections. The “Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 Elections” is a set of commitments to deploy technology countering harmful AI-generated content meant to deceive voters, they said in a statement.

The global Tech giants are committing to combatting the spread of AI-generated deepfake videos, especially those related to elections. These deepfakes use artificial intelligence to manipulate or create realistic-looking videos that can spread misinformation and manipulate public opinion during elections. Companies like Google, Meta, TikTok, and others are pledging to develop tools and strategies to identify and counter these deceptive videos to protect the integrity of democratic processes. They announced the agreement as political and security leaders gathered at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

Deepfakes can be used to spread false information, misleading the public and undermining trust in credible sources. They can manipulate public opinion by presenting fabricated events or statements as real, influencing elections, social discourse, etc. They can be used to defame individuals, incite violence, or create political unrest by spreading false narratives. Voters may also be misled about where, when, and how to cast their votes by using these tweaks.

The accord signatories are Adobe, Amazon, Anthropic, Arm, ElevenLabs, Google, IBM, Inflection AI, LinkedIn, McAfee, Meta, Microsoft, Nota, OpenAI, Snap Inc., Stability AI, TikTok, Trend Micro, Truepic, and X.

The alliance assured the public that it will be transparent about how it fights AI-generated falsehoods that leverage their platforms to try and sabotage elections. However, fighting them will require “a whole-of-society response,” the companies said. Technical tools like “metadata, watermarking, classifiers, or other forms of provenance or detection techniques” can’t fully eliminate the risks of AI, suggesting that the initiative would need the support of governments and other organizations to raise public awareness on the issue of deepfakes. Today, almost anyone may digitally produce or modify images and videos in convincing ways to trick and mislead voters.

However, the idea has been criticized by those in the technology industry who felt that it would take focus away from the need to regulate and supervise tech businesses.

“Google has been supporting election integrity for years and the accord reflects an industry-side commitment against AI-generated election misinformation that erodes trust,” said Kent Walker, President, Global Affairs at Google.

“Elections are the beating heart of democracies. The Tech Accord to Combat Deceptive Use of AI in 2024 elections is a crucial step in advancing election integrity, increasing societal resilience, and creating trustworthy tech practices,” said Ambassador Dr Christoph Heusgen, Chairman of the Munich Security Conference.

As society embraces the benefits of AI, “we have a responsibility to help ensure these tools don’t become weaponized in elections,” said Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft.

Deepfakes keep on multiplying, meanwhile. According to data from Clarity, a deepfake detection firm, the number of deepfakes that have been created increased 900% year over year.

Last month, AI robocalls mimicking U.S. President Joe Biden’s voice tried to discourage people from voting in New Hampshire’s primary election. And in November, just days before Slovakia’s elections, AI-generated audio recordings impersonated a liberal candidate discussing plans to raise beer prices and rig the election.

Creativity knows no bounds-Thanks to Sora, a new AI model launched by OpenAI

Imagine you woke up in the middle of the night, with the weirdest dream of your cats organizing the shelf. But what if you can relive the dream by generating a video of them doing so? Sounds impossible, right? Well, not anymore, thanks to Sora, Creativity knows no bounds! The makers of ChatGPT, OpenAI, have uncovered its new AI model Sora can produce realistic-looking one-minute-long videos from just text commands.

What is Sora and how does it work?

Sora, OpenAI’s text-to-video generator, can generate complex scenes with multiple characters, specific types of motion, and accurate details of the subject and background. It can also create videos based on a still image or extend existing footage with fresh content. Along with understanding user prompts, it can comprehend how these things will reflect in the real world. Sora can also understand the user’s preferences for the style and mood of the video. It can adjust the lighting, color, and camera angles accordingly. It can also handle different genres and themes, including comedy, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. Sora can also help viewers to explore and learn more about different topics and subjects, based on their curiosity and questions.

Following the introduction of the model, Sam Altman, CEO of OenAI, shared creations of Sora based on prompts requested by his followers. From cycling dolphins to a squirrel riding a dragon, he posted some sample videos that showcase the ambidexterity of Sora. Results prompted through the users’ commands looked very impressive, however, being attentive of a model that can effortlessly generate a one-minute video from simple text prompts is crucial, as it could be easily misused.

Challenges and Limitations

The software is currently in the red teaming phase, where the company is working towards identifying flaws in the system. On its official website, OpenAI has stated that it has been taking several safety measures before making Sora accessible in its products. The company went on to assert that they are working with a team of domain experts specific to misinformation, hateful content, and bias. These experts will be adversarially testing Sora. Besides, the company is also building tools like a detection classifier that can detect misleading content and tell if a video was generated by Sora. The text classifier deployed by OpenAI will keep a check and even reject prompts that violate the company’s usage policy which include, requests of extreme violence, sexual content, hateful imagery, celebrity likeness, or IP of others. The company also has strong image classifiers that will review the frames of every video to ensure that they align with the company’s usage policy.

OpenAI’s Sora comes at a time when text-to-video models have shown the astounding capabilities of AI video generation. Sora is a step further in Artificial General Intelligence. Sora is miles ahead of existing generative AI video creation models. Google & Meta also introduced a similar model, however, OpenAI seems to have surpassed all.

Meet Oter: Transforming Personal Development with Microbooks

In an insightful interview with Gaurav Khanna, one of the co-founders of Oter app, we delve into the origins, mission, and impact of this groundbreaking Microbook platform designed to facilitate personal and professional growth.

Q: What is your start-up about?

Gaurav Khanna: Every book wants to teach you something and OTER makes it easy for people in their busy lifestyle to accommodate 10-15 minutes every day to learn from books. We offer bookish insights and lessons in micro format, we call it MicroBook. We aim to offer an alternate space for people to spend some quality time and learn something every day.

Q: How many people work in your team, and what challenges do you face while starting the start-up also, what challenges do you face now?

Gaurav Khanna: We are about 11 people (part-time and full-time mixed). The biggest challenge for a startup is finding the right team, and for us, it was no exception. It took us time but we managed to find very smart people in India and Bangladesh. We are getting a lot of love from our users, and it keeps us moving. Our current biggest challenge is user acquisition and reaching the right people.

Q: What inspired you to start your own startup?

Gaurav Khanna: I worked with Kavin Bharti Mittal in Hike messenger, and my Hike tenure was very inspiring. It was a great culture and unmatched start-up vibe. That time I decided I want to do my own startup and build something of value. Coming from a poor background, capital was always a problem but software opened a new door. You can build anything anywhere and reach to your users thousands of miles away. It seemed magic when my first app made $1000, and satisfaction of your users using your product cannot be shared with words. One girl texted me once GoodApp (one of my old apps saved her life). As they say, when you enjoy work, it does not seem like work.

Q: What are the achievements of your company, and the funding you received?

Gaurav Khanna: OTER is bootstrapped, Aswien and me started OTER and Aswien invested in my vision. So far we have been able to gain 100k+ downloads, and we are constantly maintaining 4.5+ rating on both Apple and Google stores. We are continuously improving and we believe to be a one stop learning platform for next generation. One Microbook at a time.

Q: How did the idea of Microbooks originate, and what gap in the market are you aiming to fill with this innovative content format?

Gaurav Khanna: Content format has been evolving with time and it will never stop. Microbook term is coined by OTER. It was an accident. I was explaining someone OTER and ended up saying we offer book lessons in micro formats. Thus Microbook. Cave Painting -> pictograms -> papyrus -> paper -> books -> e-books -> summary apps -> MicroBook The new generation is on social media and the learning should match the new behavior. With micro books, we aim to offer a refreshing learning experience for the busy generation. We are offering not only Microbooks but goals and challenges, so we do the heavy lifting. Did I mention we offer audio as well.

Q: Could you elaborate on how Oter curates the insights and lessons from non-fiction books to ensure they are practical and actionable for users?

Gaurav Khanna: This is a question we get a lot. OTER micro book content is motivational in nature. It offers practical advice and insights which users can apply in their life. We are not a book reading alternative, we are a parallel universe. You can learn or revise book lessons on OTER. Each Microbook is made of lessons and each lesson is made of insights.

Q: In what ways do you see Oter contributing to lifelong learning and personal development, especially in a fast-paced world where time is limited?

Gaurav Khanna: I do not need to comment on how many books are in market, with OTER you can build a healthy habit of learning lessons from books every day by spending 10-15 minutes a day. Our content format and user experience is made for quick learning. Every day OTER will teach you something new. People who are busy can use OTER audio while commuting, driving. Apple unveils AI image tool that lets users edit photos using text

Apple has unveiled a groundbreaking AI image editing tool, MGIE (MLLM-Guided Image Editing), which allows users to make edits to their photos simply by describing them in plain language. Developed through a collaboration between Apple and the University of California, Santa Barbara, MGIE eliminates the need for conventional photo editing software, offering users a seamless and intuitive editing experience.

MGIE is capable of performing a wide range of editing tasks, including cropping, resizing, flipping, and applying filters, all through text prompts. This innovative model represents a significant leap forward in image editing technology, catering to both basic and complex editing needs with ease and precision.

Powered by multimodal language models, MGIE interprets user prompts and generates corresponding edits accordingly. For instance, a request for a “bluer sky” will result in adjustments to the brightness and color of the sky portion of an image, ensuring accurate interpretation and execution of editing instructions.

Consider editing a photo of a pepperoni pizza and instructing the model to “make it more healthy”; MGIE will intelligently add vegetable toppings to the image. Similarly, requesting to “add more contrast to simulate more light” will enhance the brightness and clarity of dark images, such as those featuring tigers in the Sahara.

In a statement accompanying the release, Apple researchers emphasized MGIE’s ability to discern explicit visual-aware intentions, leading to meaningful image enhancements. Extensive studies have validated MGIE’s effectiveness across various editing scenarios, highlighting its superior performance and competitive efficiency. Additionally, researchers foresee the MLLM-guided framework contributing to future advancements in vision-and-language research.

Apple has made MGIE available for download via GitHub, with a web demo accessible on Hugging Face Spaces. However, the company has not disclosed its plans for the model beyond research purposes.

While platforms like OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 offer similar capabilities in image generation, and Adobe’s Firefly AI model powers generative fill in Photoshop software, Apple’s entry into the generative AI space underscores its commitment to integrating advanced AI features into its products. CEO Tim Cook has previously expressed the company’s intention to expand AI functionalities across its devices, with recent initiatives including the release of the open-source machine learning framework MLX in December, aimed at facilitating AI model training on Apple Silicon chips.

Meta Urges Industry Collaboration for AI-Generated Content Labeling

At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Nick Clegg, Meta’s president of global affairs, emphasized the pressing need for the tech industry to address the detection of artificially generated content, deeming it “the most urgent task” of our time.

In response, Meta unveiled a proposed solution during a recent announcement. The company pledged to advocate for technological standards that would enable firms across the industry to identify markers in photo, video, and audio content, indicating that it was created using artificial intelligence.

These proposed standards aim to empower social media platforms to swiftly recognize and label A.I.-generated content uploaded to their platforms. If widely adopted, these standards could help distinguish AI-generated content from various providers such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and others, offering accessible tools for creating artificial posts.

In an interview, Mr. Clegg acknowledged that while the proposed solution might not be flawless, Meta was committed to not allowing perfection to obstruct progress. He expressed hope that the initiative would galvanize companies across the industry to embrace standards for detecting and labeling artificial content, simplifying recognition efforts for all stakeholders.

With the United States entering a presidential election year, concerns about the widespread use of A.I. tools to disseminate fake content and mislead voters have intensified. Instances of A.I.-generated videos featuring fabricated statements attributed to President Biden have raised alarms. Additionally, investigations into robocalls utilizing A.I.-generated voices urging voters not to participate in primaries underscore the urgency of addressing this issue.

Last October, Senators Brian Schatz and John Kennedy proposed legislation mandating companies to disclose and label artificially generated content, echoing the standards promoted by Meta.

Meta, encompassing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, occupies a unique position as both a developer of A.I. technology and the largest social network capable of distributing A.I.-generated content. Mr. Clegg highlighted Meta’s comprehensive insight into both the creation and dissemination aspects of this issue.

Meta’s focus centers on leveraging technological specifications such as the IPTC and C2PA standards, which provide information on the authenticity of digital media in metadata. These standards, already prevalent among news organizations and photographers, could be integrated by companies offering A.I. generation tools, signaling to social networks like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube that uploaded content is artificial.

Furthermore, Meta and other platforms require users to label A.I.-generated content upon upload, with penalties for non-compliance. Mr. Clegg noted that Meta could add prominent labels to posts deemed to pose a significant risk of misleading the public.

As A.I. technology evolves rapidly, efforts to detect fake content online continue to evolve. Meta’s proposal seeks to unify these efforts, aligning with initiatives like the Partnership on A.I., which convenes numerous companies to explore similar solutions.

Looking ahead, Mr. Clegg emphasized the importance of broad industry participation in these standards, particularly in the context of upcoming elections. He underscored the urgency of action, stressing that waiting for all pieces of the puzzle to align would not be justified, particularly during critical election periods.

Samsung teases Galaxy Ring

Forget bulky smartwatches, Samsung’s unveiling a stylish new way to wear your health on your sleeve, well, finger actually. At the recent Galaxy Unpacked event, the tech giant teased the “Galaxy Ring,” a sleek “health and wellness device” promising to revolutionize how we monitor our vitals.

Though details are still under wraps, this official debut confirms months of speculation and whispers. Samsung describes the Ring as a “powerful and accessible” tool, hinting at seamless integration with their popular Galaxy Health app and features inspired by their Galaxy Watch line.

Analyst Avi Greengard, one of the lucky few to get a sneak peek, reports up to 13 sizes and three finishes for the ring. While mum on the price, he confirms a “later this year” launch. A 2023 patent filing further reveals the Ring’s focus on tracking, measuring, and monitoring health, fitness, and sleep data.

So, what we know? It’s a ring named Galaxy Ring. It connects with Samsung Health and likely borrows features from Galaxy Watches. And its small size may limit certain functions, potentially prompting users to wear both Ring and Watch together.

While full details remain hidden, one thing’s clear: the Galaxy Ring marks a bold step into the future of wearable health tech. And with Samsung’s reputation for innovation, we can expect exciting things when this little ring finally lands on our fingers.

Toxic Backlinks: How To Identify & Remove Bad Backlinks

One of the most crucial ranking variables that search engines employ to determine how to rank content is backlinks. These are external links directing visitors to your website. They are quite useful because they are seen as an endorsement of your site’s authority and quality of information. Your chances of outranking your rivals are better the more high-quality backlinks you have.

Toxic backlinks, another name for bad backlinks, originate from websites that are spammy, dangerous, irrelevant, or of poor quality. 💀 The overall SEO performance and search engine rankings of your website may suffer from these backlinks.

Here are some traits of bad backlinks to help you recognize them more easily:

Spammy or Low-Quality Websites:

Bad backlinks are those that originate from websites that are well-known for their link farms, spamming, or low-quality content. All links from websites created especially for the goal of building links, such as private blog networks (PBNs), are included in this.

Irrelevant or Unrelated Sources:

Bad backlinks can come from websites or pages that have nothing to do with your business, niche, or content topic. Backlinks from reputable websites that offer users useful information are valued by search engines.

Links from websites inside your sector or specialization are therefore regarded as high-quality backlinks.

Paid or Unnatural Links

Search engine guidelines are broken by backlinks acquired via link exchanges, paid link schemes, and other deceptive tactics. Search engines may penalize or lose faith in these phony links if they are seen as low-quality.

Over-Optimized Anchor Texts

Search engines may become suspicious of backlinks with excessively optimized anchor text, or anchor text that contains a lot of exact-match keywords. Branded and generic anchors are included in natural backlink profiles along with a variety of other anchor text options.

Negative SEO Attacks

As part of a deceptive SEO tactic, rivals or malevolent parties may knowingly build or obtain harmful backlinks to your website. These are typically low-quality backlinks put in place to hurt the search engine rankings, reputation, and expansion of your business of your website.

Link Networks or Link Exchanges

Bad backlinks are those originating from link networks or link exchange schemes, in which websites band together to trade links with one another in an attempt to raise ranks. Such false connection patterns can be recognized by search engines, which can punish the involved websites.

The sophistication of search engines allows them to identify the kind of backlinks referring to your website with ease. They can therefore identify websites that attempt to manipulate the system through link building more easily.

It’s imperative for website managers and owners to understand how to identify and eliminate harmful backlinks from their websites. Your SEO will suffer when these kinds of websites link to your site since search engines don’t trust them.

If backlinks are goo If backlinks are good for SEO, why are toxic backlinks harmful to your site?

Google Penalties:

A large number of low-quality connections on your website may result in a penalty from search engines like Google. Your website may experience a decrease in search engine ranks or maybe be completely removed as a result of these penalties.

Being able to disavow backlinks reduces the possibility of receiving such a penalty.

Negative SEO

Competitors or nefarious individuals may occasionally build or obtain low-quality backlinks to your website in an attempt to lower its search engine rankings. We refer to this as bad SEO.

By rejecting these harmful connections, you may shield your website from unethical SEO tactics and let search engines know that you do not support or cooperate with them.

Poor SEO Performance

In general, poor backlinks pointing to your website hurt your SEO. Gaining the ability to identify and eliminate low-quality backlinks can help you raise the overall standard and relevancy of your backlink profile. Better SEO performance, more organic traffic, and higher search ranks can result from this.

Having a robust and well-maintained backlink profile is crucial for sustained SEO performance.

Let’s look at how to locate problematic backlinks and delete them from your website now that you know how to distinguish between good and bad backlinks.

Conclusion:

Identifying and eliminating faulty backlinks is a crucial aspect of maintaining your website.

After all, keeping high search engine results requires locating and removing harmful backlinks. That’s why maintaining an enhanced online presence can be ensured by routinely scanning your website for any dubious links. It also guarantees that you stay out of search engine penalties and produces strong SEO performance.

As you can see, all it takes to continue using effective content marketing tactics and safeguard yourself from the harmful consequences of bad backlinks is a few easy measures.

FedEx Unveils Innovative E-Commerce Platform ‘fdx’ to Rival Amazon

In a strategic move to fortify its position in the ever-evolving e-commerce landscape, FedEx has officially announced the upcoming launch of its cutting-edge “data-driven commerce platform” named fdx, slated to debut this fall. This initiative aims to provide online merchants with comprehensive end-to-end e-commerce solutions, revolutionizing the way businesses manage their supply chains. Building upon the foundation laid by the acquisition of ShopRunner in 2020, fdx is set to introduce novel features while integrating existing ones, further enhancing the capabilities of the platform.

FedEx envisions fdx as a game-changer for online retailers, offering a range of services encompassing supply chain data management and innovative features. The incorporation of new elements into fdx, coupled with the existing attributes from ShopRunner, will empower merchants to provide customers with estimated delivery dates during the shopping and ordering process. Additionally, the platform will offer insights into the carbon impact of supply chain resources, aligning with the growing emphasis on sustainability in the business landscape.

One of the standout features of fdx, as highlighted by FedEx, is its commitment to delivering “more efficient, cost-effective deliveries” through the strategic utilization of data. The platform’s data-driven approach is poised to streamline the delivery process, optimizing routes, and ensuring timely and reliable services. Moreover, fdx is set to introduce a “custom post-purchase experience,” allowing brands to furnish customers with precise and accurate shipment information, thereby enhancing the overall customer experience.

The strategic move to launch fdx underscores FedEx’s response to the competitive dynamics of the e-commerce industry, particularly in its ongoing rivalry with Amazon. For several years, FedEx has viewed Amazon as a formidable threat to its business. In 2019, this rivalry took a tangible form when FedEx decided not to renew a contract for flying Amazon cargo through FedEx Express. In a reciprocal move later that year, Amazon temporarily barred its sellers from using FedEx for Prime deliveries during the holiday season, citing performance concerns. However, the ban was lifted the following year.

The competitive landscape in the logistics sector has witnessed a paradigm shift, with both FedEx and UPS losing ground to Amazon. Remarkably, in 2022, Amazon surpassed both FedEx and UPS in terms of home package deliveries in the United States. This shift occurred just a few years after Amazon strategically built up its logistics operation, relying extensively on tightly controlled third-party contractors, which the company maintains are not its employees.

Simultaneously, Amazon continued to expand its logistics infrastructure, leveraging a fleet primarily composed of tightly controlled third-party contractors. This strategic move has proven immensely successful, catapulting Amazon into a position where it now outpaces both UPS and FedEx in package deliveries.

As FedEx prepares to launch fdx, the company is positioning itself to not only compete with Amazon but also to regain market share and offer innovative solutions to online merchants. The fdx platform is poised to play a pivotal role in reshaping the e-commerce landscape, offering a comprehensive suite of services that align with the evolving needs and expectations of online businesses in a rapidly changing market. With an emphasis on data-driven efficiency and a customized post-purchase experience, fdx aims to set new standards in the realm of e-commerce solutions, bringing about a transformative impact on the industry.

The recent strides in artificial intelligence (AI) technology aim to address these curiosities, introducing a new AI death calculator purported to predict an individual’s death date with an unsettling accuracy rate of 78%.

Lead author Sune Lehmann, a professor of network and complex systems at the Technical University of Denmark, detailed the underlying technology behind the AI death calculator in a study titled “Using a sequence of life-events to predict human lives,” published in December 2023. The technology, named “life2vec,” leverages the principles of transformer models, the same technology found in ChatGPT, to analyze human lives by representing each person as a sequence of life events.

Lehmann explained that the life2vec algorithm utilizes selective information from an individual’s life, encompassing factors such as health history, residence, income, and profession, to estimate life expectancy with a claimed accuracy of 78%.

“We use the fact that, in a certain sense, human lives share a similarity with language. Just like words follow each other in sentences, events follow each other in human lives,” stated Lehmann.

Distinguishing itself from the widely known ChatGPT, which assists users in job searches and fashion choices, life2vec focuses on predicting outcomes by closely examining an individual’s past experiences.

According to Lehmann, the model can predict a wide array of information, with the research team using specialized programs to forecast individuals’ personalities. Lehmann emphasized that death prediction was chosen due to the extensive history of research in the field, particularly by insurance companies.

The research team, led by Lehmann, conducted their study on a diverse subject population of approximately 6 million Danish individuals, varying in sex and age, covering the period from 2008 to 2020. Utilizing life2vec, the analysts aimed to identify which subjects were likely to survive for at least four years beyond January 1, 2016.

“The scale of our dataset allows us to construct sequence-level representations of individual human life trajectories, which detail how each person moves through time. We can observe how individual lives evolve in a space of diverse event types (information about a heart attack is mixed with salary increases or information about moving from an urban to a rural area),” the report highlighted.

Researchers input AI-specific information for each study participant using straightforward language, such as “In September 2012, Francisco received 20,000 Danish kroner as a guard at a castle in Elsinore” or “During her third year at secondary boarding school, Hermione followed five elective classes.”
