Grammarly’s Move into AI Productivity

Over 40 million people use Grammarly on a daily basis. With the acquisition of Superhuman, Grammarly plans to expand more. Recently, the company just raised $1 billion from General Catalyst, just like Raphe mPhir did(Raphe mPhir raised $100 million from General Catalyst in a recent funding). This $1 billion funding is going to give Grammarly the financial muscle to expand its AI ecosystem with a wider range of AI productivity tools.

As reported by the Reuters, Superhuman that was once famous for its exclusive invite only service, was last valued in the year 2021. It was valued at a whooping $825 million. And as of today, it brings an annual revenue of $35 million.

Superhuman’s AI-Driven Email Edge

Superhuman’s CEO Rahul Vohra, successfully built a good reputation for superhuman by helping users use emails more efficiently. Reportedly its users send and respond to 72% more emails in an hour. Additionally it is important to mention that the use of AI generated emails is increased 5x, in the last year.

In a professional setting emails remain as the most used form of communication. They are efficient, formal, and built to get the work done. As pointed out by Grammarly’s CEO Shishir Mehrotra, emails are foundational to any productivity suite. Even though Superhuman is a leading innovator in this space, the competition is increasing in the field of AI, as tech giants keep on adding AI features to stay ahead in the game. To make sure Superhuman stays in the game, Grammarly has stepped in by acquiring it and providing it the support it needs.

What’s Next for Superhuman?

Superhuman brand will continue to operate. And its CEO Rahul Vohra along with 100 more employees will join Grammarly. Shishir Mehrotra’s opinion is that he wants to support Superhuman’s growth by incorporating Grammarly’s AI agents into its products.

At the same time, Vohra sees this acquisition as a win, as it provides him and company an opportunity to invest more heavily in AI and expand Superhuman’s offerings massively. The plan is to start with emails, but it doesn’t stop there. They want to go beyond emails, and want to get into calendars, task management, as well as collaboration tools.

Building the AI Agent Network

What exactly is Grammarly’s vision? Grammarly wants to build and expand its network of specialized AI agents, that work across digital workflows. The goal? A workflow where AI agents draw insights from emails, documents, and other platforms and thereby helping the users save time that would have been utilized in searching and drafting responses.

This move wasn’t the first step to expand its AI ecosystem, as previously the company had acquired Coda, giving it a platform for the AI agents to help with research, analysis, and collaboration. And according to Mehrotra acquiring Superhuman was the next piece of the puzzle. All of this is a part of a larger trend where businesses are increasingly adopting AI to boost productivity, much like how McKinsey introduced its own AI tool, Lilli, to transform consulting workflows.
