It is true that once you open a social media application, you cannot resist scrolling. Some people are struggling with their scrolling problem to such an extent that they have to set usage limits on their phones and applications.
Although there are a lot of options for you to decide how you want to deal with the scrolling issue, TikTok, the short-video streaming platform has come up with a new feature that can potentially change the way you use the application.
The company already has a feature of setting screen time limits on the application so you can track how much time you are spending on it but now it feels there should be a way to deal with this. The new scrolling feature displays a reminder after a user has used the application for a long time.
This reminder can be predefined by the user and along with this, the company has introduced a screen time dashboard. Here, you can take a look at the time you spent on the application in one day, day and night time usage, and how many times you opened the app in a day. Users can also take a look at the weekly summary of this information.
“We will continue to invest in protecting the well-being of people so that our community can feel in control of their TikTok experience and empowered to express their creativity, make meaningful connections and enjoy culture-defining entertainment”-TikTok
Especially for teenage users (13-17 years), the application will remind them about this new tool every time they open the app after they have spent 100 minutes in one day. It will also release weekly digital well-being prompts for its young users.
All these efforts are being made since the company is trying to nurture and build a positive relationship with its users. The company said while announcing this update, “We will continue to invest in protecting the well-being of people so that our community can feel in control of their TikTok experience and empowered to express their creativity, make meaningful connections and enjoy culture-defining entertainment.”
Similar features are already available on other social media applications like Instagram and Netflix. Previously, TikTok has faced allegations about affecting the mental health of users, especially the young generation. The company also faced an investigation from a group of attorneys who were looking to see whether the company operates in a way that is affecting the mental health of young people. Introducing features and tools like these can help the company create a healthy environment for everyone.
